Encore Theatre Company
Encore Theatre Company was established in 1988 as a showcase for experimental work by alumni and associates of American Conservatory Theater. Encore has evolved from those roots and is proud to have been firing up Bay Area stages, producing innovative, immediate and critically acclaimed contemporary theater for 18 years.
Critics have hailed Encore’s work as “daring,” “provocative,” “compelling,” and “dynamic.” Encore was honored in 2005 by the San Francisco Chronicle for the production of Adam Bock’s The Typographer’s Dream which the Chronicle named one of the Top Ten Theatre Events of the year. This is the second time Encore’s collaborations with Adam Bock have received this superlative recognition, the first having occurred in 2002.
Encore Theatre Company prides itself on the range of its work. From drama (Dreams of the Salthorse and Darwin’s Finches) to comedy (Five Flights); Cabaret (Io, Princess of Argos) to verbatim transcription (I Think I Like Girls); from established (Lanford Wilson) to emerging (Adam Bock), Encore enjoys the rewards of challenge and reach.
Since 1994 when Lisa Steindler, became Artistic Director, Encore has focused on bringing new works to the Bay Area; forging San Francisco’s best actors, designers and directors with some of the best new playwrights in North America.
