Health Learnings

The Kenneth Rainin Foundation's Health Program shares insights on investments in Inflammatory Bowel Disease research.

The Kenneth Rainin Foundation invests in innovative Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) research that has the potential to improve patients’ lives. Our ultimate goal is to find a cure for this chronic disease. We partner with peer funders to gain insights on investments in IBD research and share what we learn to inform the field.

Elevating Women In Science

Thumbnail of report cover

The Kenneth Rainin Foundation’s equity journey in our Health Program began in 2017 with a commitment to addressing barriers limiting opportunities for women in science. Our Elevating Women In Science report provides data from our Innovations Symposium and grantmaking programs to transparently share our progress and highlight our efforts to increase the representation of women.

Building equitable programs requires us to collect and analyze demographic data to assess outcomes and guide our ongoing efforts. While we recognize that gender is not binary and have been collecting data on a range of gender identities, our current reporting is limited to men and women.

The report highlights:

  • The number of women speakers at our annual Innovations Symposium by year.
  • Funded awardees by year, including the percentage of women investigators who submit Letters of Inquiry (LOIs) compared to how many are invited to submit full proposals and then receive funding.
  • Our ongoing efforts to address the persistent gender bias and gaps that affect medical research.

Diet And The Microbiome

The Rainin Foundation partnered with the Helmsley Charitable Trust on Evolving Research: Diet, the Microbiome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. This 2020 report shares insights into future Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and diet research and investments. It includes:

  • The current state of dietary interventions
  • Gaps in knowledge about the microbiome and dietary interventions
  • Potential solutions for research and diet studies
  • How funders can support focused diet and IBD research
