The Kenneth Rainin Foundation invites applications for our New & Experimental Works (NEW) Program from September 9-22, 2024, using the Common Application for the Arts. Grants of $5,000–$30,000 provide unrestricted and artist fee support to small and mid-size arts organizations. These awards enable Bay Area artists to produce visionary works relevant to the communities they serve, which advance their artistic practice and push the boundaries of dance and theater. See previous NEW Program grantees.
Refinements To Support Stronger Grant Applications
In 2023, the Arts Program Team worked with Vogl Consulting to refine the NEW Program to be more supportive of artists. Through research, surveys and focus groups of artists, we learned that terms like “new and experimental,” “boundary pushing,” “relevance and timeliness” and “community connection” are interpreted differently across disciplines. To reduce ambiguity, we’ve created clearer explanations and surveyed former applicants for additional feedback. Following additional refinements, we hope that our explanations of the program criteria allow grant seekers to feel more supported in submitting strong proposals. You can review them in our frequently asked questions. As always, we welcome ongoing feedback for further improvements.
Pre-Application Workshop
We welcome potential applicants to learn more about the Rainin Foundation’s NEW Program by attending a pre-application webinar hosted by Arts Program Staff.

This webinar will be recorded and posted to our website for those who are unable to attend live.
One Stage Grant Application And Panel Process
Following its successful launch last year, we will continue using the Common Application for the Arts. We made some refinements to ensure ease and efficiency for applicants. Also for the second year, a panel of Bay Area artists and arts leaders experienced in dance, theater and multidisciplinary arts will review applications and make funding recommendations. Read how our panelists assess applications in the Evaluation Process section under How To Apply.
