A free, public art festival presenting dance and multidisciplinary arts performances by 14 local artists of color within Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve in Oakland. Local artists of color, predominantly Black and Brown womxn, will activate specific sites throughout the park with live dance and multidisciplinary arts performances.

Split will be performed by one dancer and for one audience member at a time, underscoring the individual experience of dissociation and identity formation.

There is still no medical cure for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and the clinical management is challenging. In particular, differentiating between Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) and predicting the clinical course or the response to therapy is difficult.
In this study, we aim to characterize tissue samples from IBD and control patients with a new diagnostic approach using infrared (IR) light and providing a molecular fingerprint of the disease. It is our goal to identify specific diagnostic fingerprints for CD and UC, for the prediction of the clinical course and the treatment response in patients. Finally, we will use a laser-based technique to obtain areas with specific molecular fingerprints from the tissues. Such material will be analyzed for all expressed genes with so called next-generation sequencing to determine the molecular changes associated with disease-specific fingerprints. Thereby, we hope to identify new diagnostic tools and targets for future therapy.

A dance theater song cycle offered as a site-specific tour that progresses through public and privately-owned spaces of West Oakland. Rules and agreements of space use, spoken and unspoken, are constantly colliding with the very personal but also socially embodied experience of race, gender, sexuality, histories, physical abilities, age, ancestry, and financial inequities. Audiences are invited to consider how each of us is responsible for creating welcome and engendering belonging.

2020 FURY Factory Festival of Ensemble and Devised Theater, a gathering of performing artists from the Bay Area and beyond. Featuring performances, panels, and workshops, the FURY Factory is a West Coast hub for the ensemble theater movement and works that push the boundaries of what theater can be in the 21st century.

There is a clear unmet need for ulcerative colitis (UC) patients – only a quarter of UC patients achieve remission with present therapies. Currently, there is no standardized way that studies are conducted for UC, and each study is doing things slightly different, which makes the results hard to compare and slows drug development. The FNIH Biomarkers Consortium Mucosal Healing for UC Project will harmonize the ways in which UC studies are completed across industry and academia to find the best common practices and the best measurements that signify that patients are in remission. The results of this project will be made publicly available so that the larger GI community has access to the findings and can implement best practices in order to speed the development of new treatments for patients. FDA has encouraged the evaluation of histopathology in UC clinical trials to make the claim of “mucosal healing” (MH) as a treatment goal. However, there is no community consensus on the definition of MH. There are challenges to achieving a standardized assessment of histologic disease, including: heterogeneity in collection of mucosal biopsies from study to study, lack of validated histology scoring systems and absence of standards for definitions of histologic improvement. This slows UC drug development and limits treatment options for patients. A consortium-based approach bringing together academics, industry and non-profits is needed to define and standardize MH and correlate the measurement with long-term patient outcomes. This project will: develop the definition of MH that establishes the prognostic utility of this measurement, establish best practices for collecting data to validate these measures and provide the collective voice of the community to promote acceptance by health authorities.

Oakland Public Library will purchase 14,000 books for distribution through multiple programs, including but not limited to: Día (Diversity in Action), Books for Wider Horizons preschool graduation giveaways, Summer Reading, Winter Bingo, and Share the Love outreach (distribution via the Oakland Housing Authority, hospital waiting rooms and laundromats).

IBD is a complex disorder that results from a dysregulated immune response in the gut. Current and emerging therapy for IBD treatment is mainly focused on regulation of the immune response. Exosomes are nanovesicle packing different molecules that transfer their cargo to recipient cells. Mammalian milk contains high concentrations of exosomes (MDE) carrying immune-related molecules. Our preliminary results demonstrate that MDE have a beneficial effect on experimental induced colitis. Based on these results we hypothesize, that MDE exert an anti-inflammatory immunomodulated effect on intestinal tissue. We plan to use specialized tools obtained or generated by our research groups to confirm this hypothesis and to assess how MDE might contribute to IBD treatment. In the long term we aim to study the effect of MDE on IBD patients. The use of MDE is a new promising therapeutic strategy using natural factors and safety compared to conventional immune suppression used for IBD.
