Funds will also support securing an outreach coordinator for the Oakland Reads Mini-Grants programs and establishing additional partnerships with community and faith based organizations.

To support a continued partnership focusing on transitional kindergarten to second grade literacy with 18 district schools. The goal is to reduce the number of second and third graders who are reading below grade level by providing targeted and data driven support in earlier years. Support includes leader and teacher professional development, SEEDS of Learning for new teachers only, and SIPPS intervention materials for first through second grade. Funding also includes support for Oakland Unified School District schools for the SEEDS of Learning professional development program for their transitional kindergarten teachers.

Funding over two years to support the multi-year Men of Color Early Education Teaching Fellows Pilot Project. Year one will focus on building infrastructure to recruit and support a sustainable pipeline of men of color in classrooms. Thirty participants will be onboarded over the course of two years.

The production will use immersive theater technologies to engage the audience as co-creators and interventionists in the story’s unfolding.

They use immersive experiences rooted in family recipes to honor shared struggles and advocate for radical hospitality as a means to address pressing social issues.

A site-specific, interdisciplinary play which examines the commodification of spirituality and enlightenment. The play, by Jon Bernson, takes the form of a guided meditation, set in a futuristic corporate high-rise and uses Bernson’s immersive storytelling techniques to guide the audience through a quest for individual awakening and truth.

NOD2 (nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 2) is one of the most prominent risk factors in Crohn’s disease (CD), but the chemical mechanisms by which NOD2 mutations gives rise to CD is unclear. NOD2 is a proposed sensor of bacterial cell wall fragments that when mutated results in intestinal inflammation. However, the specific commensal bacteria that activate NOD2 and mechanism(s) by which NOD2 detects cell wall fragments at the molecular level is unknown. To elucidate how NOD2 senses gut bacteria and their cell wall fragments, we will evaluate specific commensal bacteria in mouse models of CD NOD2 mutants and determine the structure of cell wall fragments in complex with NOD2. Our collaborative studies provide a unique multi-disciplinary and synergistic approach to address the molecular mechanisms of NOD2 CD mutations. Understanding these fundamental mechanisms of NOD2 should afford new opportunities to design novel therapeutics targeted at NOD2 mutations in CD.
