Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) can experience many years of inflammation and remission in the gastrointestinal tract. As a result, the intestines can undergo a structural change known as fibrosis, which narrows the inside. This narrowing is a major, and sometimes life-threatening, health issue for patients because it can block the passage of digested food and stool. Unfortunately, the only treatment for this condition consists of invasive surgical procedures to either widen the opening or remove the affected areas of the intestine. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop less invasive therapies such as drug-based treatments. Preliminary studies carried out in our laboratory have pointed to a potential role for the molecule serine, an amino acid, in the development of intestinal fibrosis. For example, we have found that serine is produced in areas of fibrosis in the intestines of IBD patients and in our mouse model of intestinal fibrosis, suggesting that it may play a role in the development of this condition. The work proposed in this application will determine if in fact serine is largely responsible for intestinal fibrosis and establish methods to limit its production and thus prevent fibrosis development. Carrying out the proposed work can lead to the development of novel treatments for intestinal fibrosis and significantly improve the lives of patients with IBD.

In collaboration with Marina Fukushima, Surjit Nongmeikapam and Mercy Housing, this project will create an intergenerational and multi-disciplinary performance that engages questions of transforming and repurposing urban spaces for affordable housing in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood. The project takes place within context of Mission Bay’s history as both “terrain vague” (empty, abandoned, marginalized and ambiguous space) and the site of immense industrial, commercial and residential development. With the participation of residents of 691 China Basin apartment complex, the development phase will begin with outdoor environmental research and indoor movement workshops.

This includes adding new StoryCycles classrooms, deepening community-based early learning programs and offering families greater access to high quality books and materials.

In partnership with artists and the Oakland community, this project will illuminate, explore and celebrate the contributions of the Black Panther Party and African American community to Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood. This project’s development will begin with a series of community gatherings and conversations to elevate the voices of the Black Panther Party and Black business owners, residents, former residents and artists. Artist team-building workshops and collaboration events will build upon and help co-create the historical memory, cultural knowledge and public understanding of the Black Panther Party and Temescal’s identity and community.

Within the David Ireland House, this project will create a physical space to gather intergenerational stories, images and visual ephemera focused on trans joy and creative resilience. Primarily serving the trans Latinx community in San Francisco’s Mission district, the development process will include hosting weekly conversations with community organizations, artists and community members around trans self-representation, reaching out to the wider translatinx community and prototyping expansion into the production phase.
