Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are part of the group called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a medical condition where the immune system is causing severe intestinal and colonic inflammation leading to severe complications. Former therapies rely on suppressing the immune system but modern treatments, so-called biological treatments, are blocking certain steps in disease progression or activation. Those specific therapies need to be given to each patient in a precise way to optimize the treatments and thus, avoiding non-responders or predicting complications before starting the treatment is paramount. Here we plan to develop a new assay to personalize each patient’s treatment by measuring all characteristics, so-called bio markers, of the individual patient at once by a modern technology called CyTOF and MIBI. Up to a hundred of those tests can be investigated simultaneously and thus, the physician can choose the optimal drug and better understand each patient’s disease.

Intestinal Bowel Diseases (IBD) affect millions of lives worldwide. However, therapeutic options for IBD treatment are limited. In this proposal, building upon our previous findings, we propose to examine an important protein called ARTS, which has never-before been studied in connection to IBD. We have found that ARTS is able to coordinate the cellular suicide of intestinal stem cells; cells that are critical for maintaining and replenishing the intestinal barrier. Strikingly, in mice lacking ARTS, the induction of ulcerative colitis was blocked and mice were able to exhibit enhanced stem cell-dependent repair. In light of these exciting findings, we have established a unique synergistic team that will identify and develop novel compound inhibitors of ARTS, to promote appropriate cellular and molecular signaling and prevent excessive stem cell death. It is our hope that the results obtained from this study will be translatable for the treatment of IBD in the clinic.

In turn, the artists will usher in new narratives that will transform the status quo.

The festival, which consists of performance, talk, and ritual, examines the stark realities of health disparity and trauma, specifically in how the two relate to HIV/AIDS acquisition and transmission, looking both at the challenges we face as a community and at the beauty that lies in our resilience.

Lakbai Diwa, Diasporic Spirit will bring visibility and collective cultural healing to the Pilipina community in San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood. The project will be anchored by site-specific dance performances, workshops, art installations, and a ceremonial procession that will feature balangays, traditional Pilipino boats, as a metaphor for how this island culture has been affected by colonialism, displacement and immigration.

Future IDs will partner with California reentry programs, community organizations and formerly incarcerated individuals on a yearlong, site-specific exhibition on Alcatraz Island. Identity-inspired artworks and monthly public programs will illuminate the life dreams as well as the racial, gender and age diversity of those who have been incarcerated. In stark contrast to prison-issued IDs, these artworks will express individual stories of transformation.

The project will include youth and adult artist mentorship teams who will bring mobile print-making laboratories to six events in Oakland. The public will be empowered to create art that documents personal and family stories of migration, relocation, identity and citizenship, creating a portrait of the Bay Area immigrant community.
