This immersive artistic experience will include site-specific, multimedia performances at and around the Ping Yuen housing complex in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Through performances, community programming and exhibitions, And the Community Will Rise will explore the legacy of and significant role that residents in Chinatown public housing play in ensuring the social, political and cultural integrity of San Francisco in the face of gentrification and displacement.

A dance performance choreographed by Keith Hennessy and Ishmael Houston-Jones, will create a queer futurist encounter where race and masculinity are destabilized, creating the ground for new forms of solidarity, desire, and community. A diverse queer cast of Bay Area dancers will chart trajectories of gay liberation, queer visibility, and racial justice through many eras of social-political struggle.

Crohn’s colitis that does not respond to medical therapy is treated surgically with removal of the colon and rectum and creation of a permanent end ileostomy. This can be devastating for some patients and is fraught with potential surgical morbidity, and even disease recurrence in the small intestine in a third of patients. Mesenchymal stem cells target pathways of inflammation important for Crohn’s disease and are being increasingly utilized for the treatment of perianal fistulizing Crohn’s disease. We are herein delivering mesenchymal stem cells with endoscopic injection into the colon wall at the time of colonoscopy to treat inflammation of the colon and rectum related to Crohn’s disease that is not responding to medical therapy in order to avoid surgical intervention.
